Yasmin and Acne

Yasmin and Acne – to be or not to be?

Yasmin, as well as Ortho Tri-Cyclen, are both popular treatments of acne. The theory is that these two birth control pills can help regulate hormonal imbalances during the menstrual cycle. However, I have heard rumors that some people see no difference in their acne while taking birth control, so I did the research and found out the facts.

Yasmin and Acne – the fact finding truth

As it turns out, Yasmin and Ortho can help treat light to moderate acne. According to a study published by Fertility and Sterility, (Sept 2001, pgs 461-468) a double blind, randomized, placebo controlled clinical trial found that a birth control pill containing levonorgestrel is effective in reducing light to moderate acne.

Yasmin and Acne – how it works.

The way birth control and acne work together is that birth control helps control and reduce the bodies natural oil production that is caused by androgen, a predominatly male hormone. Androgen is at it’s peak just before menstruation begins, and low dose birth control controls and minimizes the bodies androgen production. Low androgen equals less breakouts. I have spoken with several people who tell me they have achieved the best results when using birth control with a topical treatment, such as a 2.5% benzoyl peroxide solution.

Yasmin and Acne – Ortho and Yasmin customer reviews acne

During my research, I found the vast majority of Yasmin and Ortho users that were suffering from acne found it helped them greatly. There were a few who experienced no improvement, but not one treatment will work universally for everyone. However, the results were for the most part very positive.

Yasmin and Acne – is it for you?

As always, consult a doctor before starting any new medication. After some skepticism, and some research, it turns out birth control, specifically the yasmin pill and acne control can be a great option to treat mild to moderate acne. The best results are achieved by using birth control in conjunction with a topical acne treatment, and if you have severe acne, or are male, this may not help at all. However, for the majority of female acne suffers, Ortho and acne, or Yasmin and acne can effectively treat acne breatkouts.
